Maker Faire is an annual event created by Make Magazine to “celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset.” The first was held April 22 – 23, 2006 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. It included 6 exposition & workshop pavilions, over 100 exhibiting Makers, hands-on workshops, and demonstrations. The event is being held this weekend, May 22 – 23, 2010 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds and has expanded to feature over 1,000 exhibiting Makers, hands-on workshops, and demonstrations. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their new treasures from the pile. People can take as little or as much clothing from the pile, and it’s all free.
There will also be DIY workshops where attendees can learn to make modifications or totally transform their find. The swap features a variety of workshops by local artists who are there to share their sewing and modification secrets. All the materials needed to sew, embroider, bead, fix, repair, knit, etc., are supplied.
Swap-O-Rama-Rama also offers on sites DIY with skilled artists. There will be designers with sewing machines ready to teach people how to make modifications to the clothing items. Or there will be a hand sew area and decoration station for attendees to learn to embroider, knit, crotchet, etc. A silk screen station will also offer many amazing designs for immediate transfer as well as an opportunity to make screens using a YUDU silk screen machine.
